RECOMMENDATIONS

GEORGE SMALLWOOD - JUST FOR YOU

Reissue of ultra rare soul LP, 1000 numbered copies. Great soul with a jazzfunk vibe in "Mr Sunshine" (sounds like Leo's Sunshipp) & "Funk by the pound" plus more of a disco feel to "Lady disco". These Jazzman holy grail reissues have sold out almost immediately, so expect this one to fly.

WHITEFIELD BROTHERS - EARTHOLOGY

Basically a funk LP, but with strong ethno jazz/psych influences and a few hip hop bits too. Imagine a cross between Mulatu, Shuggie Otis and The Dap Kings and you're getting there! Check "Safari", "Sad Nile" or "Sem yelesh". Features El Michels Affair, Quantic, Poets Of Rhythm, Percee P etc.

TUBBY HAYES QUARTET - TUBBY'S GROOVE

Top quality Japanese reissue of big UK jazz rarity from the much loved Tubby Hayes. Check "Tin tin deo", "The surrey with the fringe on top" or the version of "Like someone in love". Not so cheap but still a giveaway compared to the price of a clean original copy, and it really looks superb.

CLARKE BOLAND SEXTETT - MUSIC FOR THE SMALL HOURS

180 gram reissue of incredibly sought-after jazz LP with Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Woode etc. Beautiful music with some instrumental and some vocal tunes. Check "Ensadinado", "Ebony samba" or "Please don't leave". The original is about 1000 USD, so if you don't want to spend that much but still have this on a nice vinyl pressing, here's your chance.

TROPICAL TREATS / SOFRITO SPECIALS - TROPICAL SOUNDCLASH

New Sofrito release with 4 tropical club slayers. Stockholm's own Tropical Treats do "Rift Valley groove" that sounds much like a more obscure "Greedy G". Then it's the fierce cumbia/disco crossover "Cumbia colombiana". B-side has a hypnotic Franke Francis edit plus the wicked afro/disco jam "Tabou for the people". Expensive to get in, but it's a small pressing and will probably be gone in no time.

SALAH RAGAB & THE CAIRO JAZZ BAND - EGYPTIAN JAZZ

Compilation of pioneering Egyptian jazz musician Salah Ragab's work. The music ranges from eastern modal jazz to spiritual jazz with freeform influences & even funky in parts. This man was touring a lot with Sun Ra so there's some traces of him in the music as well. If you're into ethno jazz like Mulatu Astatke or Sun Ra then you need this. "Neveen", "Egypt strut", "Ramadan in space time" etc.

NEW WORLD - WE'RE GONNA MAKE IT / CRYSTAL CLEAR - STAY WITH ME

Long awaited re-issue of this rare Curtis Mayfield/Rich Tufo produced song. Such a killer dancer with Master Henry Gibson laying down a great groove with his congas. Flipside is a classic two stepper by Crystal Clear, another strong recommendation.
